The basics

  • Drive on theRight
  • Seat beltsCompulsoryDriver and front passenger.
  • Emergency112Police, fire, ambulance.
  • Traffic drives on the right.
  • Carry your driver’s licence and the rental papers at all times: checkpoints are common and you may be asked for them.

Roads and traffic

Traffic in Lagos and Abuja can be heavy, especially on weekday mornings and evenings. Allow extra time to reach the airport to return your car, and avoid peak hours for your first drive if you can.

  • Road quality varies. Slow down for potholes, speed bumps and unmarked bumps, especially at night.
  • Watch for motorcycles, pedestrians and vehicles stopping without warning.
  • Use a navigation app, and download the map before you set off in case the signal drops.

Driving at night

Plan to arrive before dark

If you are not used to local roads, avoid long drives at night. Keep doors locked and windows up in slow traffic, park in a secure place, and do not leave belongings visible in the car.

Fuel

Same level, same fuel

Return the car with the same fuel level it had when you collected it. Fill up before you head to the airport; stations near the airports can be busy. Use the fuel type that suits the car (petrol or diesel): it is shown on the car’s page.
